This year, in the spirit of Christmas and all things creative, we’re taking on a rather unusual opponent. Sprouts! On the 19th December we’ll be joining forces to attempt to set a new world record for the most sprouts eaten in 60 seconds. With the current record standing at 31 sprouts (more than most people consume over several years’ worth of Christmas dinners!) we certainly have a challenge on our hands.
In honour of all things sprouts, here are some interesting facts you may not know about the mighty vegetable.
1) The vegetable was named after the Belgian capital of Brussels after becoming popular in the city as early as the sixteenth century.
2) Sprouts are actually very good for you – they’re an excellent source of vitamin A and contain more vitamin C than an orange.
3) Brussels sprouts were developed from wild cabbage and came from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan.
4) According to a 2002 survey, Brussels sprouts are the most hated vegetable in Britain.
5) The UK produces roughly enough Brussels sprouts to carpet the square mile of the City of London.
We’re currently hard at training in preparation for the big event, so don’t forget to follow our progress on the day for history in the making (or just general entertainment, depending on the outcome!) via twitter using #ClockCreativeWR.
